The consumer price index (CPI) in Vietnam is forecast to rise by between 0.1 per cent and 0.2 per cent on-month in April, according to the government’s market management group.

The price of rice is expected to go up slightly as rice exporters are preparing for bids in regional countries.

Price of cement is also to inch up as Vietnam is estimated to produce 8-8.5 million tons of cement while importing 1.2-1.4 million tons of clinkers in the second quarter, compared with 6.6 million tons of cement turned out in the first quarter.

Meanwhile, the price of pharmaceutical products and health care services is forecast to be stable in the next month.

The CPI fell 0.5 per cent in March, bringing the first-quarter price index increase to 2.8 per cent, much lower than the rate of 3.7 per cent a year earlier.

The Trade Ministry explained that the goods and service prices had dropped because they surged sharply in January and February when many traditional festivals took place.

This year, the country targets to curb the index increase at 6-7 per cent.
