Vietnam Motorbike Population to Reach 17Mln Units in 2006-10
The total motorbike population in Vietnam will hit 17 million units in the 2006-10 period, according to an estimate of the Ministry of Industry.
By the end of 2005, Vietnam had a total of 13 million registered motorcycles, or one motorbike/nine persons, the Vietnam Register, which is responsible for administering motorized vehicles in the country, said.
The motorcycle is the king of the road in Vietnam.
The Southeast Asian country is now home to 52 foreign and domestic motorbike manufacturers.
However, seven foreign-invested firms, including Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, SYM and Lifan, are dominating the motorbike industry.
In the first four months of this year, the motorbike industry turned out 630,600 units, inclusive of 422,000 units by seven foreign-led makers.
Vietnam has recently introduced a plan to become a motorbike exporter by 2010. It plans to send abroad 450,000-500,000 units by the end of the decade. The current production capacity of the motorbike industry is some three million units a year.
