Vietnamese fruit exporters will have huge opportunities to enter the South American market despite the high cost of transport and insurance and the competitive prices of fruit from regional producers like Chile and Ecuador, said the Trading Board of Vietnam.

The South American market still holds potential for Vietnamese enterprises with its large demand for tropical fruits like litchi, longan, and blue dragon fruits.

The region annually has to import a large amount of fruits from Southeast Asia countries including Vietnam to satisfy its consumers’ need as it has limited favorable weather conditions for growing tropical fruit trees.

Identifying specific varieties such as litchi, longans and dragon fruit as being ideal for export to South America, the trade board said enterprises should focus on investment in facilities and post-harvest technologies to improve the quality of their fruit exports.

At present Vietnam and Brazil have a good diplomatic relationship, with most-favored nation conditions in trade as an advantage not only to fruit exporters, but for the development of other sectors as well.

At present, Vietnam's vegetables and fruits are available in 50 countries and territories worldwide, with China being its largest market, accounting for 42 per cent of total export turnover. Following are Singapore, the US and Taiwan.

In the first five months of this year, fruits and vegetable exports generated some US$102 million for Vietnam, up 3.92 per cent over the same period last year.
