Bilateral trade between Vietnam and China were estimated at US$4.64 billion in the first half of this year, up 17.35 per cent on-year, said the Ministry of Trade (MoT).

The figure accounted for 46.4 per cent of this year’s projection of US$10 billion, up 14.55 per cent on-year.

Of the sum, Vietnam reaped US$1.44 billion from exports to the neighboring country, up 14.5 per cent on-year, meanwhile it spent up to US$3.2 billion on imports, up 18.7 per cent on-year. The figure resulted in a trade deficit of US$1.76 billion during the period.

Vietnamese exports to China are very diverse with 15 export items, but staple goods are rubber, seafood, cashew nut, vegetables, fruit, raw minerals and fuel.

At present, the neighboring country is Vietnam’s third largest export market and still remains a potential market for local exporters. China is estimated to spend a large investment of around US$850 billion for imports from now until 2010.

Vietnam expects to earn US$3.2 billion from exports to China in 2006, up 8.07 per cent against 2005, the MoT said.
