Vietnam Leads Global Telecomm Growth
Vietnam has now become the world’s fastest telecommunication industry, according to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
By August 2006, Vietnam had 22 million telephone subscribers or 26.19 registered phones for every 100 people.
The figure represented a 242-fold increase over the year 1986, heard the 4th national conference on IT and telecom recently held by the Ministry of Posts and Telecom in Thua Thien Hue province.
According to the International Telephone Union (ITU), the growth rate of fixed line telephones in Vietnam in the period from 2000 to 2005 was 44.1 per cent annually, the world’s highest rate, compared with Asian average growth of 11.9 per cent and the world average of 5.3 per cent.
Vietnam’s mobile phone growth rate in the 2000-2005 period increased 62.7 per cent annually, a high rate in comparison with the Asian and global averages.
The Ministry of Posts and Telecom said over 64 per cent of telephone subscribers are mobile phone users.
To date, Vietnam also has more than 3.77 million internet subscribers, reaching 4.49 subscribers per 100 people. The number of people with access to the Internet hovers at 13.8 million, accounting for 16.4 per cent of the total population.
