Vietnam has already gained a deal to sell 5,000 tons of long ordinary rice to Japan at an auction held last weekend, according to the Vietnam commercial affairs office in Japan.

The is the seventh contract of its kind so far this year, bringing Vietnam’s total rice exports to Japan to 124,078 tons, including 3,000 tons of sticky rice.

Average price offered in the auction is 68,374JPY, or US$584, per ton.

Other contract winners include Thailand, the US and Australia.

Last year, Vietnam shipped nearly 89,000 tons of rice to Japan. Of which, 79,000 tons, including 8,000 tons of glutinous rice, were gained from tenders launched by the Japanese government.

Vietnamese rice exports to Japan have been growing over the years as Japan is a demanding market for food products. The increase in rice exports to Japan also shows that Vietnamese rice meets the country’s strict requirements on food safety and hygiene.

As of mid-December 2006, Vietnam exported 4.26 million tons of rice worth $1.2 billion, down 400,000 tons compared with the same period of 2005.
