Post, Telecom Sector Targets US$3.75Bln Revenues in 2007

The Ministry of Posts and Telecom has announced it will obtain a total turnover of VND60 trillion ($3.75 billion) in 2007, up 25 per cent against 2006.
 
Do Trung Ta, Minister of Posts and Telecom, said to realize the target, the industry will sign up additional 11 million mobile phone users and 1.8-2 million internet subscribers in the year, totaling 38 million and 5.8-6 million users, respectively.
 
If these goals are reached, the tele-density will be 43 telephone main lines/100 inhabitants while the internet users will reach 21-22 per cent of population, Minister Ta said at the annual review meeting of the post and telecom industry in Hanoi yesterday.
 
The sector will also provide printed publications to more remote and mountainous areas in the country.
 
Minister Ta said the post and telecom sector recorded a high growth rate in 2006, in spite of encountering natural disasters.
 
As of late 2006, Vietnam’s post and telecom sector operated nearly 19,000 post offices (1,900 more than 2005), sent daily newspapers to 91.4 per cent of communes nationwide, signed up over 26 million telephone users and served more than four million internet subscribers. (Vietnam & World Economy)
