Pha Rung Shipyard, a member of state-backed Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Group (Vinashin), launched construction of a 12,500-DWT dry cargo freighter for Vinashin Maritime Co. (Vinashinship) in northern Haiphong City on January 22.

This is the largest ship to be built by the northern shipbuilder. The vessel needs four months for completion.

The $11.5-million freighter, which will measure 126 m long, 20.2 m wide and 11.3 m high and is powered by 3,965-kW Akasaka-Mitsubishi engine, was designed by Japan’s Kitada Co. The construction is overseen by Japanese register of NK.

The ship will be delivered to Vinashinship in May 2007.

The successful construction of the 12,500-ton ship in 2007 is a milestone in the project upgrading the building capacity of the shipyard, which is going to build a 6,500-ton chemical tanker for a South Korean company and 34,000-ton cargo ships for a UK client. (Labour)
