Vietnam’s largest shipbuilder Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Group (Vinashin) officially opened its new subsidiary unit specializing in offshore industry services on February 1 in Hanoi.

Vinashin Offshore Industries Company (Vinaoffshore) will focus on manufacturing floating storage and offloading (FSO) units, single print moorings, oil drilling vessels and other heavy equipment, Tran Thanh Nam, director of Vinaoffshore, said.

The new unit will also use resources from state-backed Vinashin and other affiliates of the unlisted group to sign manufacturing contracts and upgrade equipment used for maritime exploitation, he added.

Vinashin CEO Pham Thanh Binh said Vinaoffshore was assigned to manufacture FSOs for an affiliate of State-owned PetroVietnam, the state oil and gas monopoly in Vietnam.

Each FSO is designed to have a load capacity of 150,000 tons and handle 15,000 tons of oil a day.

The FSO will be Vinaoffshore’s first since it joins the country’s rapidly expanding shipbuilding industry. (Labor, VNS)
