Exports of flowers to China through the Mong Cai border gate in the northern province of Quang Ninh have boomed since early February, Trade Ministry said.

The surge, from 2.5 tons to 4 tons per day, was attributed to China's increasing demand for flowers for their traditional lunar new year festival, which will fall in mid-February.

The ministry said Dalat roses are now a favorite of many Chinese, their prices also sharply rising.

Meanwhile, imports of other kinds of fruits and flowers from China also increased markedly, especially orange, spinach, lettuce, cucumber and babycorn. Total import turnover of these products is estimated at over $20,000 per day.

Last month, Vietnam imported $1.16 million worth of fruit from China, down nearly 83 per cent on year. (www.saigon-gpdaily.com.vn)
