Taiwan’s Compal Electronics, the world’s 2nd contract PC and monitor maker, has planned to invest US$30 million to construct a notebook plant in Vietnam to cut growing production costs, military-run Quan Doi Nhan Dan newspaper reported Thursday.

Compal expects to build a new notebook factory with monthly capacity of 300,000-500,000 notebooks in late 2009 or in early 2010.

By shifting to Vietnam, Compal Electronics will have its production cut by 3-5 per cent thanks to the tax incentive pledged by the government of Vietnam and low-cost workforce, compared with that in Shanghai, the group President said, noting it will expand operations in the neighboring country.

Besides, Compal Electronics produces PC components for Dell and Hewlett Parkard.

Compal Electronics Inc. said on Tuesday its second-quarter net profit rose 92 per cent on year to TUS$3.251 billion (US$99 million) as global demand for notebook computers remained healthy. (People’s Army Online)
