Vietnam to Operate 135 Power Plants by 2015
Vietnam plans to put in use 135 power plants with combined capacity of 48,744 MW from now onto 2015, under the national electricity development plan between 2006 and 2015, and vision 2025, or plan VI, local media reported.
Of the total, nine power plants with capacity of 2,096 MW will be operated this year.
The planned power generation sources are aimed to fulfill the country’s average electricity demand with annual increase of 17 per cent and the peak rise of 20 per cent per year in the 2006-2015 period.
Under the plan, Vietnam will also build small-sized hydroelectric and renewable energy projects.
The combined capacity of the energy sources is expected to increase by 1,200 MW in the 2006-2010 period and by 1,250 MW in the 2011-15 phase.
With a view to tackling the country’s adverse power thirst, the Ministry of Industry (MoI) has recently approved national electricity demand-side management program between 2007 and 2010, said the Electricity Regulatory Authority of Vietnam (ERAV).
Under the program approved by Industry Minister Hoang Trung Hai, MoI hopes to reduce national power demand by 500 MW in 2010 and 1,200 MW in 2015.
Vietnam, which is now heavily reliant on hydroelectricity, will shift its energy source structure with priority given to thermal power sources after 2010.
A source from the Electricity of Vietnam Group (EVN) said Vietnam will lack between 4.3 and 10.3 billion kWh from 2007 to 2009. (
