Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has recently decided to pump US$5 billion into a project building a 4,400-MW coal-fired power plant in Mekong Delta Tra Vinh province, local media reported.

The plant will cover 400 ha in local Dan Thanh commune, Duyen Hai district. The plant is expected to operate turbine 1 in 2012.

However, information about the project’s groundbreaking and electricity output has not yet been made available.

Vietnam will lack 4.3-10.3 billion kWh of electricity from 2007 to 2009 due to increasing demand, a source from the Electricity of Vietnam Group (EVN) said.

The country that is heavily reliant on hydroelectricity will lean to thermo-power after 2010. (Youth)
