Seaport Development Plan Weighs Anchor On Growth
The Vietnamese seaport system remains underdeveloped and underused, with many ports operating without necessary infrastructure, an industrial official said.
Ho Kim Lan, general secretary of Vietnam Seaports Association (VSA), said no Vietnamese seaports can receive medium-sized vessels of 50,000 DWT or 2000-TEU container vessels.
The seaport development is ad hoc, experts said
The northern coast has four deepwater ports of Haiphong, Cai Lan, Lach Huyen and Hai Ha, with distance 100 kilometers from each other.
Similarly, the central region is thickened with Da Nang, Quy Nhon, Nhon Hoi, Dung Quat, Ky Ha, Tien Sa and Chan May.
The thick density of seaports and the limited supply of goods hinder the full operational capacity.
Experts also blame poor design and a lack of accountability for the industry’s inefficiency.
Cai Lan port in northern Quang Ninh province was originally planned to accommodate ships of 50,000-ton or 3,000 TEUs but is only able to serve ships of 10,000-20,000 DWT.
Vietnam has more than 100 seaports on along 3,200 km coastline. (VNN)
