Vietnam and the U.S. are now trying their best efforts to narrow differences and boost mutual understanding in order for the bilateral in-depth and expanding trade, economics ties in the future, the newly-appointed U.S Ambassador to Vietnam Michael W. Michalak told mass media on Friday.
The U.S. diplomat’s missions are to boost the in-depth and scale of the bilateral trade and economics relations between the two countries because they do not reach common consensus on several issues, Nguoi Lao Dong (Laborer) Online said.
Michael W. Michalak acknowledged the positive improvement regarding religious groups in Vietnam over the past 2-3 years, it noted.
To achieve the targets, the US envoy affirmed that he will work with the government of Vietnam to improve transparency, business administration, particularly simplification of licensing procedures for FDI projects.
Before taking office in Hanoi, the U.S. diplomat said he did conduct contacts with U.S. businesses who want the government of Vietnam to further improve its investment environment.
The U.S. ambassador aims to double the number of Vietnamese students to be trained in the U.S. during his term. He personally wants staffers of U.S consulate to visit universities to learn about the real demand of students for visas or expand fundraises for Fullbright to support them.
We [the USA] can help set up links between Vietnam’s universities and the U.S. educational institutions, the diplomat said.
Dioxin is now internationally recognized as a toxic agent, which should be cleansed from the environment in Vietnam. The U.S. side will work with the Vietnamese government to map out plans for this issue. This year, the U.S. will grant US$3 million to help detoxification of contaminated areas. We have program to provide healthcare services for Vietnamese citizens, the ambassador said.
Two sides now are preparing actively for the upcoming visit by Vietnam Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung by the end of September, which proves the significance of importance of the bilateral cooperation relations. Visit exchanges should be boosted, Michalak said.

Michalak, born in Detroit, Michigan, a career Foreign Service Officer over 30 years with extensive knowledge and experience in Asia, was sworn in as the United States Ambassador to Vietnam on August 10, 2007.
