Representatives from 100 world leading groups and 70 domestic corporations will take part in talks with Vietnam’s senior government leaders about the business environment and ways of enhancement, at a business roundtable in Hanoi in early January 2008, state media reported December 18.

The conference entitled "Vietnam: Asia's Rising Star", to be held at the National Convention Center January 8-9, will be a converging venue for major foreign firms namely Accor, BP, General Electric, HSBC, Metro Cash & Cany, Nokia, Philips, Shell, Posco, Singtel, and Societe Generale.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, Deputy PM Pham Gia Khiem, and five ministers will join the roundtable to talk to foreign investors, which will be co-held by the World and Vietnam Report of Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Economist Conferences of the U.K.’s Economist group.

Over 30 topics to be discussed at the roundtable including the government's economic vision for Vietnam, the financial market, new investment opportunities, experience of CEOs in doing business in Vietnam, and ways to improve the investment environment among others, said Vu Son Thuy, editor-in-chief of World and Vietnam Report, at a press meeting in Ho Chi Minh City December 17.

A program of business exchange will be held in the event with the participation of representatives from 100 foreign groups and multinational firms and more than 200 local enterprises, Thuy noted.

The program will focus on five sectors, which are regarded as very hot for economic development of Vietnam, namely infrastructure, real estate, manufacture, finance-banking, and tourism, he added.
Vietnam’s economy will expand by 8.5 per cent in 2008, higher than the 8.3 per cent growth in 2007 despite the slowdown in the U.S. and other economies, the Asian Development Bank said in its semiannual Asia Economic Monitor (AEM) report. (Local sources)
