Citi Foundation recently inaugurated a project to train homeless and orphaned children and young people in Hanoi for jobs. This is the fifth year in a row Citi Foundation funded the vocational training project for teenagers in Hanoi and surrounding areas.
This year’s VND244 million will be used to train 50 people in three months. Through Citi Foundation’s project, under-privileged adolescents and families will be trained for such careers such as refrigerating electricity, welding and hotel service. Mr Charly Madan, General Director of Citi Vietnam, said “We are very proud to continue making contribution to assisting Vietnamese youth through Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union. I am very excited when I think of the feats of trainees after the training programme. I believe that this project will generate opportunities for them to change their lives.”

Mr Bui Phuong Dong, Director of Youth Vocational Training and Recruitment Centre, said Citi Foundation has trained more than 200 unprivileged teenagers and almost all of them found jobs.

Through its global network, Citi Foundation has funded many projects in finance education, youth education and community building. In these fields, the Finance Foundation helped micro businesses develop throughout the world. Since 2001, the fund donated US$326 million to many countries in the world. In Vietnam, Citi donated over VND15 billion (nearly US$1 million) to community and charity programmes.

Especially, after 2007, Citi organised the Microenterprise Award in Vietnam for the first time in order to honour people who escaped from poverty by micro lending from the microfinance programme.

Next year, Citigroup plans to continue funding poverty reduction programmes and financing education with total aid of nearly VND2 billion. Apart from funding projects and programmes of non-government associations, Citibank staff members in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City actively take part in community development programmes.

Citi Foundation mainly focuses its aid in three fields of finance education, future generation education, and community and enterprise development. For more information, please visit www.citigroupfoundation.org.
