Vietnam exported 1.1 million tons of rice worth US$633.6 million to the Philippines in the first half of 2008, accounting for more than 45 per cent of the foreign country’s total export volume, the Vietnam Trade Information Center (VTIC) said.
The center said the exports to the Philippines marked on year rises of 40.75 per cent in volume, and 158.64 per cent in value, and recognized the Philippines as the biggest importer of Vietnamese rice.
In the January-June 2008, Vietnam also exported 336,575 tons of rice to Cuba, notching up US$296.85 million, and making sharp rises of 203.93 per cent and 699.43 per cent against the same period of last year.
Meanwhile, export volume to Poland hit 6,348 tons, valued at US$3.63 million.
In terms of variety, Vietnam exported 85,950 tons of 15 per cent broken rice worth US$103.2 million in June, down 6.73 per cent in volume but up 17.03 per cent in value against May 2008. The rice was mostly exported to Cuba, the Philippines and Lithuania, for US$1,201 a ton on average, up 25.5 per cent from a week earlier.
Meanwhile, export of 25 per cent broken rice decreased 77 per cent on month in volume to 59,017 tons worth US$56.27 million, down 73.46 per cent in value. 25 per cent broken rice was sold to the Philippines and Tanzania for US$953.7 a ton, up 11.67 per cent from May 2008.
Early August, the prices of 25 per cent broken rice dropped to US$520-US$530 a ton, from US$650-US$680 a ton in July.
Prices of 5 per cent broken rice also decreased to US$550-US$600 a ton, down by US$70-US$100 a ton from a month earlier. (Vinanet)
