The U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC) will impose anti-dumping tax on uncovered springs imported from Vietnam, slated from December 2008, the Tuoi Tre newspaper reported, citing the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade.

The U.S. International Trade Committee (ITC) has affirmed that Vietnam-made uncovered springs have been sold on the U.S. market with prices lower than normal value, the ministry said.

DOC said in July that uncovered spring imports from Vietnam had caused damages for its domestic industry. The investigation had conducted nearly one year after companies in the U.S. lodged complaints in December 2007.

Eleven Vietnamese businesses, mostly in the southern region, are accused of dumping uncovered innerspring units in the foreign market.

From 2005 to 2007 Vietnam shipped US$2.7 million worth of uncovered springs, mostly used to produce bed mattresses for adults and children.

The U.S. side used to accuse Vietnam of dumping tra and basa catfish to the foreign market. Vietnam lost the two cases. (Youth)

Vietnam’s Auto Import Estimated at US$45Mln in November

Vietnam is estimated to have spent US$45 million importing 1,500 new automobiles in November, equivalent to those in the previous month in terms of both value and volume, Thoi Bao Kinh Te reported, citing General Statistics Office (GSO).

The country’s car imports seem to be stable, or even rising by the year end, after contracting sharp falls for seven consecutive months ending in September which only saw import of 1,000 units only, the paper said.

In the past 11 months of this year, around US$2.4 billion worth of new complete-built units (CBUs) and automobile parts, including 48,300 CBUs valued at US$976 million, have been imported into Vietnam, the statistics showed.

The January-November figures reportedly represented respective rises of 94.7 per cent, 107.7 per cent, and 117.1 per cent against the same period last year. (Vietnam Economic Times)
