Recently, Center for CIO Leadership of IBM has completed a survey on management capacity of CIOs from all over the world. The result shows that the role of CIOs is undergoing more and more changes in a bigger and more positive orientation.
CIOs are having a large opportunity to grow out of the role of “experts” to participate in making strategic plans to accelerate production growth and renovation within the organizations and enterprises. However, it is necessary that CIOs make endeavors to perfect themselves to meet enterprises’ development demand. The survey provides lots of valuable lessons for Vietnam to have talented CIOs in the future.
The survey gets conducted via Internet by the Center for CIO Leadership. Questionnaires are sent to 1,500 CIOs from all over the world and 266 CIOs (20 percent) fill in the questionnaires. These CIOs work in 30 different fields in 45 countries with their enterprise scale of more than 5,000 people (62 percent) and less than 1,000 people (13 percent).
The comparative method is used to highlight the difference between the fact and the demand for CIO in modern administration towards 4 main topics including: management, strategic plan, renovation and growth acceleration, talent attraction. The particular result as follow:
1, Up to 90% of CIO answered that they were managing and having effect to other staff in enterprises, 85% of CIO are people who regularly give initiative for maintaining the activeness in the companies, organizations.
2, However, the CIO with important roles in managing board of enterprises, organization ( 87% of interviewees) have not handled this opportunity. Only 67% of CIO actively took part in planning business strategies.
3, Although CIO are people who accelerate creativeness and give new ideas, only less than 2/3 of the CIO find out necessary speech-up source to implement this plan and bring the development opportunities for their enterprises.
4, The CIO know how to direct the development of their IT staff. However, among 93% interviewee who knew the important skills for their staff, only 64% of CIO built up the plan for development and talent attraction, 69% of CIO successfully made the decentralization process to more focus on developing the strategies.
Mr. Harvey Koppel, Director of the Center for CIO Leadership says that more than ever, CIOs are in good positions to exercise leadership. CIO must be managers with a base on technology.
Mr. Ed Toben, Senior Deputy Chairman in charge of global sales service and information technology of Colgate Palmolive Group, states that, “the survey result gives a factual insight into CIO nowadays and difficulties in changing CIO’s role”. Key factors for success such as management capacity, strategic vision and ability to push growth and finance are what CIOs need to aim at so that they can be turned into creative motives and necessary changes for their organizations.”
PhD Dinh Quang Nuong, Deputy General Manager Operations for insurance transactions and Information Technology of Prudential Vietnam shares that “talented CIOs in the future have to successfully voice the “voice of technology”, figure out an interaction between technology and business, and think in the language of business. Only until then does information technology become a useful product for competition.”
The survey points out opportunities for CIOs in improving their skills in strategic business plans in order to upgrade their influence in enterprises and organizations they work for. The survey also serves as a base for the Center for CIO Leadership to establish and partners.
