Vietnam’s apparel sector will have to make great efforts to earn US$9.2 billion-US$9.5 billion from exports in 2009 as the world textile and garment demand is forecast to fall 15 per cent, state media said Tuesday, quoting Vietnam National Textile and Garment Group (Vinatex).

Vinatex’s vice General Director Le Tien Truong said the ongoing global economic slowdown will cause negative impacts on Vietnam apparel products, especially hi-end ones.

To reach the target, garment makers will raise added value on their products via remodeling technologies, improving management capacity and diversify markets, Truong said.

He also urged enterprises to expand their export markets to the Middle East, Eastern Europe and Africa, avoiding much dependence on some traditional markets.

The industry reported export revenues of US$9.1 billion in 2008, falling short of the target of US$9.5 billion. Of the total value, Vinatex contributed US$1.7 billion, Truong said. (The People, VOV, VNS)
