Vietnam-Hong Kong Trade Soars 23.1 per cent to US$3.75 Bln in 2008

Bilateral trade between Vietnam and Hong Kong last year still grew sharply by 23.1 per cent to US$3.75 billion despite the global economic downturn, reported the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT)’s website.
 
Vietnam exported US$998 million worth of commodities to Hong Kong in 2008, up 34.4 per cent on-year and imported up to US$2.76 billion, up 19.4 per cent, resulting in the country’s huge trade deficit of US$1.76 billion during the year.
 
Among Vietnam’s key imports, telecom devices took the lead with US$431 million, up 57.1 per cent, followed by wool fibers worth US$267 million, up 23.8 per cent, office devices with US$177 million, up 62 per cent, alcohols with US$168 million, up 6.8 per cent, cotton fibers with US$109 million, down 4.3 per cent and fruits with US$93 million, down 27.7 per cent.
 
Meanwhile, the country exported telecom devices worth US$231 million, up 70.5 per cent, footwear with US$75 million, down 1.5 per cent, electronic devices with US$62 million, up 61.3 per cent, meat with US$39 million, up 19.6 per cent, generator and components with US$37 million, down 10.1 per cent, leather products with US$35 million, up 311.2  per cent and seafood with US$32 million, up 3.3 per cent.
