Thailand and Vietnam, the two biggest rice exporters in the world, have agreed to set up common rice export prices for the first time, foreign media reported.

The agreement, which was reached at a meeting between Thais government’s representatives and Vietnam Rice Association in Hanoi, is aimed to stabilizing rice price and increasing rice competitiveness in the world market.

Thais deputy minister of trade, Alongkorn Ponlaboot said the agreement will benefit Vietnamese farmers more because their rice will be selling for higher prices. Vietnamese rice has been offered some US$100-US$200 a ton lower than Thais rice.

The agreement will be carried out in four levels: between governments, exporters, farmers and experts.

But Thais official said the agreement can not be signed this year, and detailed rice export price has also not yet been made.

Early February this year, 100 per cent white rice offered by Thais exporters was selling for US$575/ton while the price for Vietnamese rice was only US$410/ton. (cri.com)
