Moheir Industries, a Hong Kong-based firm, is now in need of importing a large volume of footwear products from Vietnam to re-export to the U.S. and South American markets, the Ho Chi Minh City Shoe and Leather Association said.

This is a good opportunity for domestic footwear makers, who are now thirsty for orders resulting from the consumption reduction due to the global economic downturn, the association said.

Currently, almost all of 400 firms of the industry are operating perfunctorily and have not yet sought new contracts while the current orders will expire by May or June.

The Vietnam Leather and Footwear Association (Lefaso)’s statistics indicated that the footwear sector’s export turnover reached only US$915 million in the first three months, down 10.8 per cent on-year.

In first quarter, the footwear shipment to the EU, Vietnam’s biggest footwear importer accounting for 65 per cent of the total market share, reduced by 15 per cent. (Investment)
