Vietnam boasts a huge reserve of bauxite and has potential for bauxite mining and alumina production development, however, it will not develop it at any cost, Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai told a conference held in Hanoi Apr 9.

The cabinet official noted that this industrial development must be sustainable and needs strict and scientific management solutions.

At the meeting, Mr Hai instructed to adjust the master plan on zoning off the bauxite exploitation, processing and use during the 2007-2015 period with a view towards 2025, in line with the country’s new conditions and based on new data.

He asked a strategic report on assessment of environmental impacts in the region.

The country’s bauxite exploitation will initially serve alumina production due to its power shortage, but for a long-term view, plans for aluminum production should be prepared, Hai said.

The deputy PM urged relevant agencies and investors to train personnel for the industry and tighten management to mitigate impacts on the natural environment, culture and people’s life in the central highlands.

Vietnam ranks third worldwide in bauxite recovered with 5.5 billion tons, mainly concentrated in the Central Highlands region, said the conference. (Labor, VNA)
