Vietnam has many kinds of fruits and vegetable the EU market is in need, Dr. Reg Leenes, an export marketing and managing expert from Dutch CBI organization said.

Currently, Vietnamese fruit and vegetable’s market share in EU is very small, with blue-dragon fruit accounting for only 1 per cent and banana, 10 per cent. Meanwhile, many kinds of Vietnamese famous fruits like longan, litchi and durian have not yet presented in EU, the Dr. said.

Vietnamese exporters said they find hard to penetrate into EU because this is a choosy market with many barriers. But Vietnam’s neighbors like Thailand and Malaysia ship a large volume of fruits to this market annually.

Dr. Leenes said lack of trademark and unstable and low quality fruit are the major hinders to Vietnamese exporters, noting that they are still weak at trading fresh fruit and vegetable and lacking information of market and price.

To overcome difficulties, the CBI will cooperate with the HCM city agricultural support and advisory center to open training courses in Vietnam and fact-finding tour in the Netherlands.

Vietnam exported US$91 million worth of fruit and vegetable in the first quarter of 2009, up only 2.6 per cent against the same period of last year. (Rauhoaquavn.vn)
