Vietnam to Turn 500,000 Hectares of PaddyLand into other Purposes
Localities in Vietnam will turn around 500,000 hectares of paddy cultivation into other purposes from now to 2030, the Saigon Liberation reported, citing the Plantation Department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
The department said some 325,000 hectares will be turned into non-agricultural purpose while 175,000 hectares will be for other crops with higher economic value.
In the 2009-2010 period, the localities will turn around 80,000 hectares of paddy land into other crops.
The department said despite paddy land decline, the agricultural sector will boost application of advanced technologies in order to reduce production cost and raise productivity, adding that the sector will raise total paddy output to 45 million tons in 2030, from current 38 million tons.
