A large influx of foreign workers are pouring into Vietnam where is seen as a “red address” for their employment in the context of the global economic slow down, according to Navigos Group, a leading human resource service provider.

Nguyen Thi Van Anh, the group’s Regional Director said, the increase in foreign workers in Vietnam was attributed to the country’s reforms in investment environment and big foreign direct investment wave, leading to the higher demand for qualified labor force that the domestic market unable to provide.

Additionally, it is due to the government’s decisions to cross out a regulation on the maximum rate of foreign workers in a business of 3 per cent and to allow overseas Vietnamese to buy houses in the homeland.

Anh also added that this is a big chance for Vietnamese companies to recruit high-quality staffs such as a chief executive officers and chief operating officers.

Experts however noted that the growing number of foreign workers in Vietnam, including unskilled laborers, is putting the job stability of the local workforce at risk.

There no official statistics about unskilled foreign workers in Vietnam, but it is estimated there are tens of thousands, particularly Chinese and the number is seemingly on the rise, state media said.

The number of Chinese workers dwarfs populations of Vietnamese laborers at several projects namely Tan Rai bauxite mine in Central Highlands Lam Dong province, the Quang Ninh thermo-power plant, Hai Phong Coal-fueled Power Plant and the Ca Mau Gas – Power – Fertilizer project.

The Prime Minister has asked the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs to review the current labor regulations to limit the unskilled foreign worker inflow.

The ministry will also take responsibility for check labor use and management in localities nationwide to submit labor violations to the PM before May 31. (VNA, VietnamNet, VnEconomy)
