Vietnam, Russia Sign MoU on Atomic Energy Cooperation
The Vietnam Atomic Energy Commission (VAEC) and Russia’s State Atomic Energy Corporation (ROSATOM) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to boost atomic energy cooperation.
The two sides inked the MoU during the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov’s visit to Vietnam July 24-25.
Energy-thirsty Vietnam expects nuclear power to satisfy between 15 per cent and 20 per cent of the national energy consumption demand by 2050.
Vietnam plans to start construction of its first nuclear power plants with a combined capacity of 4,000 MW, costing US$9 billion in the central province of Ninh Thuan in 2013.
The Southeast Asian country also intends to spend VND2 trillion (US$117.6 million) for a nuclear science and technology training program to provide enough human resources for the plants once they are up and running in 2020. (Great Unity, VNA)
