Vietnam and Thailand are boosting cooperation to avoid dumping rice prices on the global market, the Vietnam News Agency reported, citing an official of the Vietnam Food Association (VFA).

The move will bring more benefits to rice producers in the two countries, said Huynh Minh Hue General Secretary of the VFA at the 2009 Thai Rice Forum held in Bangkok on July 13.

Hue also emphasized the need to improve the quality and trademark of Vietnamese rice on the global market.

On the same day, President of the Thai Rice Exporters Association Chookiat Ophaswongse said that closer cooperation and more information exchange between Thailand and Vietnam would give both countries a better chance to negotiate sales contracts.

Thailand currently is the largest rice exporter in the world with an export target of 8.5 million tons this year, while Vietnam ranks second with a target around 5.5 to 6 million tons. (Vietnam & World Economy)
