Vietnam’s electricity output in the first seven months of this year rose 9.6 per cent compared with the same period in 2008 to reach 44.85 billion kWh.

Commercial power output reached 41.14 billion kWh in the seven-month period, up 8.3 per cent against the same period last year.

Power consumption by the industry and construction sectors rose 8.78 per cent on-year, consuming 49.2 per cent of the total commercial electricity output in the seven-month period.

Power use by the management sector and households went up 6.95 per cent on-year, using 41.4 per cent of the total commercial output, while power consumption by agricultural, forestry and aquaculture sectors was down 4.2 per cent on-year.

In July, Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group (Vinacomin) started construction of the 440-MW Mao Khe thermal power plant in the northern coal-mining province of Quang Ninh.

The VND9.3 trillion (US$547.06 million) plant is expected to contribute 2.6 billion kWh of power annually to the national electricity grid once it is fully operational in 2012.

Vietnam has planned to achieve electricity commercial output between 85 billion and 86 billion kWh by 2010 to meet the domestic power demand. (Urban Economy)
