Vietnam and the U.S. are preparing to renew their air transport agreement, which has been in effect since January 2004, said an official from the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam (CAAV).

Lai Xuan Thanh CAAV deputy director general said that a U.S.-Vietnam Air Transport Agreement could be reached later this month if the two countries’ officials agree on a date to sign the agreement.

Thanh added that last month the prime minister asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to authorize the Ministry of Transport to renew the air transport agreement with the U.S.

Thanh said that the revised agreement would include changes, mainly in transported goods as negotiated in the Open Skies deal for all-cargo services inked between the two countries on October 7 last year.

Thanh, however, noted that the new agreement would almost remain unchanged in terms of passenger services.

The renewed air transport pact is expected to expand the already strong trade and tourism cooperation between the two countries, as well as offer benefits to American and Vietnamese cargo carriers and shippers.

The CAAV said that FedEx is among the cargo carriers that has benefited from developing cargo services between of the U.S. and Vietnam. (Saigon Economic Times)
