Saigon Newport Company has become a stronger operator of container ports and a reliable supplier of port services in Vietnam. The Vietnam Business Forum had a talk with Mr Ngo Minh Thuan, Deputy General Director of Saigon Newport, about the achievements and investment projects. Saigon Newport may have good cooperation prospects with US partners.
Could you talk about the remarkable business and investment activities of Saigon Newport Company in the first months of 2009?
Our company is operating in a wide range of fields such as civil and military construction in the mainland and on islands, mechanical technical services, real estate and finance. But, our core business is seaport and logistics services.
In spite of suffering negative impacts from the global economic recession, proper business policies enabled the company to achieve better-than-expected results in the first six months of 2009. Throughput reached 1.1 million TEUS, a rise of 8.3 per cent year on year and 15 million tonnes of goods were handled. Revenues rose 7.2 per cent, profit jumped 35.2 per cent and tax payment surged 29.8 per cent. The company's port handled 79.4 per cent of containers to and from Ho Chi Minh City, an increase of 12.79 per cent from 2008, and kept nearly 50 per cent of the country's market share. Besides, the company invested more than VND600 billion to build key items and purchase equipment for business expansion. The company has put into operation Tan Cang Pilot Company, which leads all ships into and out of Cat Lai and Cai Mep ports (around 300 ship calls a month).
On June 3, 2009, the first phase of Tan Cang - Cai Mep deepwater port was put into service, debuting the service for Japan-flagged MOL Premium ship, which was 293 metres long and capable of carrying 75,000 DWT, or 6,300 TEUs. The vessel shipped Vietnamese goods to a port in the United States.
On August 6, 2009, the Saigon Newport Company inaugurated the Tan Cang - Long Binh ICD (the first 80 ha out of 230 ha). This is the largest inland clearance depot in Dong Nai province and is expected to facilitate customs clearance in the province and to serve Cat Lai and Cai Mep ports.
The achievements result from the policy of working with customers to gain joint success. Cat Lai Port has successfully applied the electronic management programme and drastically implemented a number of solutions to improve the customer service quality. At present, the operation of the container port has been equal to modern international and regional container terminals. The company continues improving its reputation and manages to affirm its leading position in Vietnamese port sector. Saigon New port also operates in accordance with its slogan "Come to Saigon Newport is to Come to the Best Quality Services."
Could you provide more information about the joint venture to operate Tan Cang - Cai Mep container port in the second phase?
After the first phase is put into service, the port will be fully operated in September. We are quickening necessary processes to build the second phase and operate from October 2010. The company will build the infrastructure (600 metres of wharf, 40 hectares of yards, offices and supporting facilities). Then, the company will select partners for the joint venture (the shortlist include Hanjin of South Korea, MOL of Japan and WanHai of Taiwan). They will lease the infrastructure and invest in port equipment for exploitation of the port. This will be the largest transhipment terminal with annual throughput capacity of 1.5 million TEUs or 20 million tonnes.
The Cai Mep deepwater port is located in a favourable location and can support large-size ships.
What message does the Saigon Newport Company want to deliver to investors in the US and in the world?
With the advantage of No. 1 seaport in Vietnam and stable high growth, the Company is always a reliable and attractive address for any partners investing in port operations and logistics services in Vietnam and sharing the same intention of cooperating with us to invest in other regional countries.
Additionally, we operate in many other fields such as building waterway projects, providing technical services (repairing and installing port equipment), investing in real estate, etc. We would like to introduce the following projects to the investors: the 38-hectare Tan Cang area (maritime trading promotion centre, conference and exhibition centre, office blocks, hotels and apartments for lease, etc), the 50-hectare Bai Khem resort (Phu Quoc Island) and Cam Ranh (Khanh Hoa). Especially, we have a 150 hectare land plot in Long Binh (Bien Hoa City, Dong Nai Province) and we can double the area to 300 hectares to build packaging lines, distribution centres, vocational training centres and offices for lease.
