The Military Telecom Company (Viettel) wants to buy stake in Bangladesh’s state-run mobile phone company, Teletalk, and invest US$250 million in the firm, the Vietnam News Agency said, citing Bangladesh Ministry of Telecommunication Shafayet Hossain.

He said Viettel has revealed its plan on the sideline of the 4th World Information Technology Forum 2009 (WITFOR 2009) in Hanoi last month.

Once the agreement is reached, Viettel expects to make profit in next 15 years after three first years of unprofitability, the newspaper said.

Viettel will provide free-of-charge Internet connection services in schools in Bangladesh.

Under the plan, the Vietnamese firm will build up 19,500 BTS to provide network services for 3.5 million local clients, install 50,000 kilometers of optic cable and roll out 3G services also in the South Asian country.
