The Saigon Military Port was founded on March 15, 1989 under the Decision 41/QP of the Ministry of National Defence. On July 13, 1993, the Prime Minister signed the Decision 352/TTg to set up the Saigon Newport Company. In 2006, the company was transformed into a holding company.

On February 9, 2010, the Defence Minister signed a decision to upgrade the Saigon Newport Company into the Saigon Newport Corporation.

After 21 years of construction and development, in addition to excellently accomplishing military and defence tasks and adopting strategic and dynamic view to face severe challenges in the integration process, Saigon Newport Corporation has proved its leading position in terms of container terminal and logistics service development in Vietnam. The Corporation was honourably awarded the Top 20 Vietnam Strong Trademark 2009 Title by the Vietnam Economic Times Magazine in coordination with the Trade Promotion Agency (Vietrade) under the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

In 2009, although the volume of imports and exports declined in the face of global economic recession, the container throughput at Tan Cang - Cat Lai Port and Tan Cang - Cai Mep Port managed by the Corporation still climbed 21 % from 2008 to 2.46 million TEUs, accounting for 80 % of market share of Ho Chi Minh City container ports and 50 % of the country’s market share. This achievement was attributed to a long process of creative labour and strong willpower of all staffs, especially sound investment strategies for generating high quality human resources, building infrastructure, buying equipment, applying modern and effective IT to production administration, together with the endless efforts of the Corporation in improving the quality of customer services.

At present, Saigon Newport Corporation has made presence in most important areas in southern Vietnam.
