Washington State Governor to Visit Vietnam in September
Governor of Washington State Chris Gregoire will visit Vietnam and China in September to expand exports to the two Asian markets, the Governor’s Office said in a press release dated June 21.
Gregoire Administration expects the state’s export turnover to Vietnam and China to hit $600 million each annually after the trip, the Communist Party of Vietnam said on its website Wednesday, citing the release which however gave no further details.
The export increase will help to create more jobs for citizens to recover the state’s post-crisis economy.
Apart from the trading purpose, the trip aims to encourage more foreign students to study in Washington, Chris Gregoire said at a hearing with congressional committees June 22.
Asia has weathered the recession better than we have, so the hope is to reach out to buyers there and develop new markets for Washington businesses, Gregoire's spokeswoman Karina Shagren said.
Washington State has been well-known for aircraft, electronics, biotechnology and mining industries.
In 2006, trade between Vietnam and the state reached $530.52 million, including Vietnam’s trade surplus of $469.5 million.
