Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung called on ASEAN countries to build trans-regional electricity and gas pipeline systems in order to ensure energy security in the region in the next years.

Dung made the statement at the official opening ceremony of the 28th ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM 28) in Dalat City on July 22, the Communist Party of Vietnam said.

He also urged regional members to boost implementation of the ASEAN oil and gas security agreement, to accelerate cooperation in applying and transferring clean coal production technology, and to further close tie in using renewable energy sources.

Joining hands in developing nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, building up cooperative plans on developing low-carbon economies with international partners, and enhancing dialogues and cooperation among enterprises and governments would be facilitated, he noted.

The official opening ceremony drew over 500 foreign attendants, including ministers of 10 ASEAN countries, Japan, South Korea, China, India, New Zealand and Australia; as well as about 100 Vietnamese state and corporate officials.
