Greater Mekong Sub-region Ministers Opens in Hanoi

The 16th ministerial meeting of Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS) countries comprising Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam, officially opened in Hanoi on August 20 with the participation of over 200 delegates. 
 
At the meeting, GMS ministers and officials of the Asia Development Bank (ADB) discussed and approved a cooperative strategy framework for the period of 2012-2022.
 
The strategy framework will outline cooperative plans to improve transport network and commercial favors, cooperate in developing energy, agriculture, tourism, human sources and coping with environmental issues among regional countries.
 
On August 19, Vietnamese Minister of Planning and Investment Vo Hong Phuc chaired a senior officials’ meeting (SOM) to prepare contents for the 16th GMS meeting.
 
The six GMS nations have implemented an ADB-funded program for the comprehensive cooperation in transport, energy, telecoms, manpower, management of natural sources and environmental protection since 1992.
 
Last year, ADB has pledged to provide US$104 million to develop the GMS economic corridors. (Labor)
