Vietnam Lowers 2010 Pepper Export Forecast to 132,500 Tons
The Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has revised its forecast on the country’s pepper export volume this year down to 132,500 tons from previous 135,300 tons, given lower pepper output.
The ministry said the country’s total pepper output will drop 20% from a year earlier to only 90,000 tons in 2010, mostly due to diseases and unfavorable weather in the central highlands region.
Vietnam exported more than 87,000 tons of pepper worth $286 million as of Aug 15, with prices soaring 38.3% on-year to $3,247 a ton on average, said the Vietnam General Department of Customs.
The ministry forecast that the export prices will stay high until the year’s end thanks to thin supply on the world market.
Currently, Vietnamese pepper is exporting for $3,675 a ton of black spice while prices of white spice are ranging from $5,250 to $5,450 a ton. (Vneconomy)
