Building New Countryside in Lam Son Sugarcane Material Zone
Returning to Lam Son sugar cane material zone, I kept thinking about the process of building a new countryside. The rural market close to former Sao Vang Plantation (now Lam Son - Sao Vang Co., Ltd) remained insipid.
It would surely need a lot of money for rural transportation and public utilities but where did money come from and how could this place make money for this purpose?
In 2008 and 2009, the economic downturn caused many people in industrial parks to lose jobs and they returned to the hometown. What they needed was a land to live on.
The importance of agriculture in this area is very clear. Looking at the Lam Son sugar cane material zone, we can see engineers and scientists of agriculture wearing short-sighted glasses instruct farmers to grow sugarcanes. In the past 25 years, Lam Son Sugar Joint Stock Corporation has invested VND500 trillion in this land and completed the task of poverty reduction. This is a great success. The new task of the company is how to productivity and sugar content of sugarcanes to help farmers get more from their products.
Mr Le Van Tam, Chairman of the Lam Son Sugar Association and President of the Board of Directors of Lam Son Sugar Joint Stock Corporation, said: What we need is to change the nature of rural economy and increase the surplus value of agricultural production. The idea of establishing sugar growing joint stock companies (basing on capital sharing of farmers and businesses) and applying high technology to production is the way to increase the value on an area unit. Mr Tam said: "Here, we are completely capable of setting up a hi-tech agriculture research institute to serve farmers directly. We are embarking on this project."
To unite segmented plots into larger units to boost the productivity, more people need to quit farming. Hence, the production of the Lam Son industrial park and Lam Kinh ecological and tourist site has been initiated by Lam Son Sugar Joint Stock Corporation. The company also plans to open vocational training schools. These will help diversify careers and increase incomes for rural people.
