Vietnam Exports 5.6M Tons of Rice in Jan-Sept: Trade Ministry

Vietnam is estimated to export 5.6 million tons of rice for $2.588 billion in the first nine months of 2010, up 12.3% and 15.2% on-year, respectively, local media reported, citing the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
 
The ministry said that export prices of Vietnamese rice were averaging at $462 a ton during the period, up 2.6% compared to a year earlier, thanks to tightened supplies from China, Thailand and Pakistan.
 
The Philippines continued taking the lead among 19 major importers of Vietnamese rice with total import volume of 1.46 million tons worth $940.2 million between Jan and Aug, down 6.87% in volume but up 10.32% in value from the same period of last year.
 
Singapore, the second largest importer, bought 441,480 tons worth $179.2 million, up 92.09% and 89.96% on-year, respectively.
 
Meanwhile, exports to Cuba, the third largest importer, decreased 21.55% on-year in volume and 23.31% in value at 297,125 tons worth $123.6 million, the ministry said.
 
Other big importers were Taiwan and Malaysia with respective revenues of $116.8 million and $98.1 million.
 
The ministry noted that China began imported rice from Vietnam, for the first time over the past five year, with a total volume of 98,080 tons worth $40.9 million between Jan and Aug.
 
However, exports to such eastern European countries as Russia and Ukraine, and other EU countries like France, the Netherlands, Spain and Italy dropped sharply during the period. (Countryside Today, Vinanet)
