U.S., Vietnam Enhance Science Technology Cooperation

Vietnam’s Ministry of Science and Technology and the U.S. Department of State held the 7th meeting of the Vietnam-U.S. Joint Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (JCM) in Hanoi Dec. 9-10 to strengthen cooperation between the two nations in the field.
 
During the two-day meeting, participants discussed future cooperation in fields of healthcare, ICT, oceanic science-environment-climate change, agriculture-biotechnology-biodiversity, scientific education, space, energy, traffic safety and measurement standards.
 
More than 40 international oceanic and environment scientists and researchers from the U.S. shared experiences with 50 Vietnamese colleagues in the field.
 
Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Tran Viet Thanh affirmed the U.S. is among important partners of Vietnam in scientific and technological cooperation.
 
In the next decade, the two nations will focus cooperation on boosting innovations and technology transfer, staff training, science-technology project R&D; and encouraging major U.S. groups to invest in this field in Vietnam, he said.
 
During the event, Vietnam’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and the U.S. Department of the Interior signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation in the earth science and effective management of natural resources amid the global climate change.
 
Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology also inked a MoU with the New York Botanical Garden.
 
The U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam, Michael W. Michalak, emphasized the importance of cooperation between scientists and the private sector, and science-technology businesses. (Vietnam Economic Times, Vietnamplus)
