TOTAL- is an exemplary example of a successful French business in Vietnam which has established an early start in the South-East Asian region. Total has quickly asserted the position of a world-class energy group. Following the success of the French Week in Vietnam held in late November, we are pleased to have an interview with Mr Jean NEHLIL, General Director of Total Refining & Marketing Vietnam, to learn more about TOTAL, a leading international energy supplier in Vietnam.
Could you briefly introduce TOTAL ?
With operations in more than 130 countries, TOTAL is involved in all aspects of the petroleum industry, including upstream operations (oil and gas exploration, development and production, liquefied natural gas) and downstream operations (refining, marketing, trading and shipping of crude oil and petroleum products.)
Total is also a producer of base chemicals (petrochemicals and fertilisers) and specialty chemicals for industrial and consumer markets (processing rubber, additives, chemical particles, and materials for plastic industry). In addition, Total has interests in the coal mining and power generation sectors. The group is developing complementary next generation energy activities (solar, biomass and nuclear energies).

Could you exemplify some recent outstanding activities of TOTAL?
In the past time, although the world economy encountered numerous difficulties arising from the global financial crisis, TOTAL’s operations were not affected but made solid strides. For example, in 2009, we had upstream operations, including exploration and production, in more than 40 countries; oil and gas production in over 30 countries; daily output of 2.28 million barrels of oil equivalent; and reserves of 10.5 billion barrels of oil equivalent as of December 31, 2009.
Besides, TOTAL- has positive achievements in downstream operations. The group ranked first in Western Europe in oil refining and trading; ranked first in Africa in -marketing; and was one of leading trading companies of crude oil and refined products in the world. The refining capacity was in the region of 2.6 million barrels a day. The distribution network included nearly 16,300 gasoline service stations. The petroleum trading reached 3.6 million barrels per day, with leading brands of TOTAL, Elf, Elan and AS 24.
Another field I want to mention is chemical. Total is one of world’s largest chemical producers and is ranked first in petrochemical, fertiliser and specialty chemical.
So, why did TOTAL arrive in Vietnam?
Arguably, French companies are pioneers in investment operations in Vietnam. Soon after Vietnam entered a doi moi (renovation) period, Total made presence in the country since the late 1980s with the exploration and production operations. TOTAL’s downstream operations started with a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) joint venture in 1991, followed by lubricant trading and retail network in the late 1990s. TOTAL Refining and Marketing in Vietnam now has more than 500 employees working in seven affiliated companies and six factories (in Can Tho, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang and Hai Phong), petrol stations in Da Nang, and offices in these cities.
How has TOTAL Vietnam operated?
Total is one of leading LPG providers in Vietnam. This business is performed by its affiliates, including Totalgaz Vietnam, Total Gas Cantho, Elf Gaz Danang and Total Gas Haiphong.
These member companies have their own gas storage facilities and gas bottling plants with Totalgaz and Elfgaz brands. Saigon Gas became a member of Total in late 2008 following an acquisition deal.
In the lubricant supply field, Total Vietnam Limited (TVL) is a wholly Total-owned unit after the French firm acquired ExxonMobil Vietnam Company Limited. TVL produces and trades in engine and lubricants in Vietnam.
TOTAL has established a broad distribution network in Vietnam. The group is the only multinational petroleum distributor in central Vietnam. The company will continue to develop to meet growing energy demand in Vietnam.
Not only paying attention to production and business activities, TOTAL Vietnam always strives for sustainable development. What would you like to comment on this?
In its development principle, TOTAL always gives prominence to Health Safety and Environment (HSE) factors. HSE is a core value of Total. All employees have the responsibility of performing their works in line with the Group’s health, safety and environment principles. We apply highest standards for safety of daily activities of all employees, customers and shareholders.
Another concern of TOTAL is corporate social responsibility. With our sustainable business operations, we contribute to socioeconomic development in Vietnam. In recent years, Total has focused on improving health and education conditions in Vietnam’s rural areas through its funding for school construction, scholarships, biogas systems, clinic construction; and supports for Da Nang Medical University.
Thank you very much! We wish Total more success in Vietnam!
