The Hanoi People’s Committee and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) have committed on 24th February to joining efforts in improving public transport in the capital city.

The 2 parties signed a Technical Cooperation Project which aims to develop capacity for public transportation management and improve public awareness in utilization of public transport in Hanoi. The Project will be part of the country’s effort to reduce traffic accidents, traffic congestion and gas emission from vehicles after years of rapid growth.
The Project includes dispatch of experts, training of Hanoi officials in Japan and other countries, and procurement of equipment for implementing pilot activities.

In the past decade, JICA has assisted Hanoi City to modernize its transport system through ODA loans for improving infrastructure and technical cooperation for traffic safety. Currently, JICA is supporting urban railway and subway projects in Hanoi.
“This new technical cooperation is considered a committed and continuous effort of JICA to establish an ideal traffic society for Hanoi,” said Mr Tsuno Motonori, Chief Representative of JICA in Vietnam. “We will jointly develop a good public transport system to tackle traffic problems and make the lives of Vietnamese people safer, more convenient and environmental-friendly.”

The project will be implemented in three years with a budget of US$3million funded by the Japanese Government.
