Some 22km east of Thai Binh City, Tien Hai District has great potential for economic development in Thai Binh Province. With the advantage of being a coastal area with favourable transport network and large population, Tien Hai has developed its strength for coastal economic development, making it the district’s key economic area.

A coastal district, Tien Hai often lacks fresh water for agricultural production in dry season. Besides, the district has not yet planned any natural aquatic catching area and the breeding area has not met all required standards. The district also faces capital difficulties and sudden weather changes.

However, the district has identified difficulties for it to overcome and focused on its orientations. To date, the district has 908 boats for aquatic breeding, with a total 2,197 labourers. Total fish output is estimated at 9,666 tonnes per year, bringing in a value of VND341.496 billion. Taking advantage of coastal land, the district has over 4,077 ha of aquatic breeding area which brings in a total output of 30,630 tonnes annually, including 24,460 tonnes of oyster, 1,400 tonnes of shrimps and 420 tonnes of crabs. These results are thanks to the renovation of equipment and sci-tech application in the breeding process. Seafood has become a main source of income for local residents.

With a 23 km coastline, Tien Hai has alluvial grounds suitable for sea tourism services. The district plans to carry out a project to upgrade coastal transport system and build resorts. Dong Chau, Con Vanh and Con Thu are attractive resorts for visitors. Besides, the district also plans to build a coastal industrial complex to make use of its advantages. Tien Hai coastal industrial complex mostly focuses on aquatic processing and services. Natural and social advantages will support the development of industrial complexes.

Alluvial grounds play an important part in sea economic development. Every year, Tien Hai’s coastal areas are aggraded with a great amount of alluvium by the Red, Tra Ly and Lan Rivers. These are good conditions for aquatic development. The coastal warps in Tien Hai are very fertile, with the unique features of river mouth areas.
Tien Hai also pays attention to both economic development and environmental protection. The district has 128 garbage dumps. It has appraised and pledged environmental protection for 24 projects. The project is calling investments for daily rubbish treatment such as the construction of incinerators, waste recycling at industrial parks and dealing with environment pollution at Con Vanh eco-resort.

Recognising environmental requirements for sustainable development, the district plans to build a waste collection and treatment area, including incineration. This is a firm step to preserve the sea’s natural beauty.

To facilitate aquatic breeding, the district has applied measures to prevent disease.

The local Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has joined hands with the Department of Aquatic Breeding and Veterinary.

The district has also opened training courses on aquaculture, disease prevention and quality breeding animals for local households.

Receiving strong support from concerned agencies, locals have focused on sea economic development and environmental protection. Tien Hai’s success in economic development along with environmental protection is evidence of its right orientation. These will lay the foundation for its future and can be examples for neighbouring localities.
