As the new breeze of "green architecture" is blowing strongly into Vietnam, how to both please investors and ensure sustainable development and environmental friendliness of each project is a permanent question for leaders of Vietnam National Consultant Joint Stock Corporation for Industrial and Urban Construction (VCC) when it undertakes any project.
VCC, formerly the Architecture Industry Design Institute founded in 1969, constantly focuses on building up expertise and capability. At present, the company has more than 300 employees, most of whom have university degrees or above. The company has asserted its position in the Vietnamese architecture world.

Success from unity and friendship
After more than 40 years of construction and development, VCC has undertaken many important pioneering projects, particularly industrial factories and urban zones. VCC also transformed into a joint stock company from a State-owned entity to operate better in the market-oriented economy.

Defining that human resource is a crucial and determining factor to the development of a consultant, VCC always focuses on building up a strong force of brilliant engineers and consultants and uniting all members to create a united line-up to easily carry out any tasks. As a long-standing consultant, VCC has many different generations of engineers. This is a plus for human resource development and service deployment as experience of senior generations is combined with creativity and dynamism of younger generations.

VCC is proud to have many employees working from the university graduation until retirement and the company is also a place of interest for all new architects and engineers. One of the reasons for VCC’s today success is the promoted role of trade unions and professional associations which serve as a bridge to link employees with leaders. Employees of different generations keep close connections and share experience of work and life with each other. They consider the company their second home.

Through its development history, the company and its employees have won a lot of honourable awards and titles from the Party and the State like Second and Third-grade Independence Orders; First, Second and Third-grade Labour Orders, Certificate of Merit from the Prime Minister, Minister of Construction, the Vietnam Trade Union.

Efforts for "green" projects
With structural construction solutions, “green structure” does not mean creating walls of trees on the surface of grey concrete but seek out overall solutions to this matter from the start of urban planning. All processes from choosing location, shaping, using material, equipment and technology must ensure environment-friendly, energy-saving and waste-recyclable criteria.

Concerning the concept of green architecture, Le Quang Dao, VCC President, said: So far, VCC in general and I myself in particular have strongly supported this trend and ardently expected to follow it because this is a certain trend in urban development when living quality of humankind is enhanced, environmental pollution is worsened and climate change threats exacerbated. But, it is not easy to persuade investors to support this trend when the land value is increasing and they will have to spend a lot for imported technology, equipment and materials which are now not made in Vietnam. However, VCC always tries its best to help investors to harmonise factors of interest and factors of sustainable urban development.

While investors naturally want initial costs as low as possible, consultants must actively analyse economic benefits of a green project to investors. VCC experts always convince its investors to choose the best direction and position in relation to climate, chose energy-saving equipment, heatproof materials, create an open spaces in line with aerodynamic principles, install cooling and energy control systems, etc. The company’s typical projects using green architecture include Samsung factories, float glass plants in Binh Duong province and Thanh Ha urban area.

Besides, VCC forges cooperation with foreign partners experienced in "green architecture" from France, the United States, Germany, Denmark, Japan and other nations. This cooperation offers good chances for VCC officials and engineers to access updated information on latest green technologies and materials being applied in the world. VCC also encourages its investors to apply criteria adopted by the Vietnam Green Building Council (VGBC) and refers to popular assessment tools in the world like LEED, Green Star and Green Mark. VCC plans to register for the membership of the Vietnam Green Building Council (VGBC).

In 2002, VCC obtained the ISO 9001-2000 quality management certificate granted by the UK-based BVQI. As defining that “Quality is the prestige, the result and the best marketing tool in the market economy,” VCC always upholds the trust of customers and strengthen its position and reputation in the competitive construction consultancy market.
