On October 5, 1971, the first turbine of the Thac Ba hydropower plant was officially connected with the national power grid. Since then, after nearly 40 years of continuous operation, the plant has produced over 14 billion kWh of electricity for the national economy.

On March 30, 2006, Thac Ba Hydropower Plant went public and started operating in the form of a joint stock company with main business lines of producing and trading electricity; Managing, operating, repairing and maintaining irrigation works, architectural works, hydropower plants and transformers; Testing and calibrating electrical devices; Trading, exporting and importing electrical equipment; Advising construction projects, managing construction investment and supervising power construction; Investing in power source projects and power grids; Training for the management, operation, maintenance and repairing of equipment in power plants; and Providing tourism services.

In order to diversify production and business activities, in 2010, Thac Ba Hydropower Joint Stock Company established the Technical Services Centre to train operation, management and repairing of power plants in northern Vietnam.

After roughly 40 years of continuous operation, production lines have become obsolete, outdated and unsafe. Hence, the company has gradually upgraded and overhauled its production lines. After upgrading, these production lines will operate stably over the next 30 - 40 years. Other supporting items like green areas and landscaped areas have also been invested.

In 2011, the company is facing daunting hardships in production activities caused by prolonged drought and insufficient water flows.

To offset the anticipated drop in revenues from power production, the company has boosted the provision of technical services for power plants in the region, sought out effective power source projects, economised costs; and promoted creativity of staff. It has also applied ISO 9001:2008 international quality management system and ISO 14.000:2004 environmental management system.
