From a downgraded military port with backward equipment and technology, after 22 years of construction, renovation and development, Saigon Newport Corporation is rated as the most prestigious container terminal operator in Vietnam by shipping companies given its outperforming terminals across the country. The corporation has become a leading provider of seaport operation services and logistics services.
Saigon Newport Corporation has continuously expanded its scale, capacity and competency since its establishment in March 1989. To date, the corporation is managing five terminals and many inland clearance depots (ICD) and depots all over the country. It also has dozens of affiliates and subsidiaries operating in different industries. Coupled by operating expansion, SNP always concentrates on modernising equipment, technology and governance system to meet higher business demands. Presently, it is using TOPX port management programme made by Australian RBS (Realtime Business Solutions). This system is also being used by world-leading modern ports like Hamburg in Germany and Yokohama in Japan.

At present, Saigon Newport holds the leading market share among the terminal operators in Vietnam. Its import - export container throughput accounts for more than 80 percent of the market share in the Ho Chi Minh City region and nearly 50 percent in the country. With impressive achievements, Saigon Newport has actually become a big name and asserted its position and prestige in the region and in the world.

The corporation is now operating two largest container terminals in Vietnam, namely Tan Cang - Cai Mep Terminal in southern Ba Ria - Vung Tau province, and Tan Cang - Cat Lai Terminal in Ho Chi Minh City. The former is the first international container transhipment terminal in Vietnam capable of handling 1.8 million TEUs of cargo a year. The 15.8 metre deep terminal with a 60-ha yard and nearly 1 km of wharves, meeting international standards, is capable of accommodating ships of 120,000 DWT, or an equivalent to 11,000 TEUs. Tan Cang - Cai Mep now handles vessels of the direct services from Vietnam to the United States and the Europe without having to dock at third countries, thus shortening the service duration to 7 - 10 days and enhancing the competitiveness of Vietnamese goods on global markets. Since June 2009 (when the first phase was completed) to date, Tan Cang - Cai Mep has served 596 ship calls carrying 5.7 million tonnes of cargo. In 2010 alone, its cargo throughput accounted for 65 percent of total throughput in Ba Ria - Vung Tau province. Senior Lieutenant Colonel Tran Khanh Hoang, Deputy General Director of Saigon Newport Corporation, said: “I hope that with the development of Tan Cang - Cai Mep deepwater port in couple with local attractive investment policies, Ba Ria - Vung Tau province will catch the fancy of investors operating in light industries and high tech industries in the coming time.” Meanwhile, Chairman of Ba Ria - Vung Tau People’s Committee, Tran Minh Sanh, said: “The operation of Tan Cang - Cai Mep marks a milestone in Vietnamese maritime history. For the first time, there are direct services to the United States and Europe, which unlock potentials and promote advantages in competing with other regions. The presence of Tan Cang - Cai Mep deepwater terminal creates a driving force for accelerating the rapid development of industrial parks in Ba Ria - Vung Tau province and southern economic zones.”

Tan Cang - Cat Lai Terminal is now the biggest and most modern international container terminal in Vietnam. The terminal, with a total berth length of 1.2 km and a depth of 12 m, can handle 3 million TEUs a year and serve six 30,000-DWT (or 2,000 TEUs) container vessels at the same time.

In 2010, cargo through at ports operated by Saigon Newport totalled 2.8 million TEUs, or an equivalent to 37 million tonnes of cargo. The corporation had a high annual cargo throughput growth of 20 percent in the 2006 - 2010 period. In 2010, revenues topped US$225 million, an increase of 267 percent over 2006, and profits reached US$56.5 million, up 215 percent from 2006. Remarkably, in 2010, Saigon Newport was name the National Value - a title presented to just 43 companies in Vietnam.

Remarking on achievements attained by Saigon Newport Corporation, Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai said: "The very military discipline has made the power of Saigon Newport. As a pioneering business in constructing and operating seaports, building corporate culture and perfect military discipline, I very much believe that Saigon Newport will step up the provision of logistics services of regional and international quality in the coming time in addition to its port operations.”
