The Vietnamese Ministry of Planning and Investment organised a consultative workshop on Vietnam’s green growth strategy in 2011-2020 period, with a vision to 2050.

At the workshop held in Hanoi on May 14, 2012, international sponsors and organisations highly valued this strategy. They said that the strategy will help Vietnam gradually transit from the current economic model to a more sustainable one with higher labour productivity, more balanced socioeconomic development and environmental protection.

Delegates to the workshop said the strategy also needs the support and financial resources of the private sector, nongovernmental organizations, and other sources.

Vietnam’s green growth strategy aims to develop policies, restructure the economy, reform the fiscal system, and create investment flows to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and carbon, increase the green content in GDP growth and green employment, and improve living quality by building environment-friendly lifestyles. Under the draft strategy, Vietnam will strive for at least two-fold increase in GDP against 2010, while reducing energy consumption by 2 - 3 percent and green house gas emissions by 10 - 15 percent by 2020.

After the consultation, the Ministry of Planning and Investment intends to submit the strategy to the Government by June 2012.
