Alstom and Vietnam Electricity (EVN) on May 18 announced a partnership that will establish a state-of-the-art gas turbine reconditioning workshop in Phu My district in Ba Ria Vung Tau province along the southern coast of Vietnam.
The partnership will be implemented as a Joint Venture (JV) and the corresponding agreement was signed in Hanoi by EVN Representative of Management Board, President and CEO Mr. Pham Le Thanh and Alstom Thermal Power President Mr Philippe Cochet.
This will be the first reconditioning workshop in the country, and the first in Alstom's network in Asia. The JV will create more than 140 new jobs for skilled Vietnamese workers and reflects EVN and Alstom’s commitment to supporting the national drive for investment and employment in technically advanced industries.
Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai remarked at the signing ceremony that the joint venture was an important, fruitful partnership thanks to internationally recognized reputation and experience of Alstom and advantages of EVN. Especially, the workshop was located in a strategic, competitive position of Vietnam as well Asia where have been considered a potential, emerging market of electricity, oil and gas in the long run, he noted.
“This joint undertaking to build a high-tech reconditioning workshop is a result of the close relationship we have with EVN and of our desire to work with local partners to develop highly-skilled local capabilities. The new workshop is a key element in Alstom’s growth plans in Asia and demonstrates our commitment to Vietnam and to our Asian customers,” said Mr Cochet.
To further build their long-term relationship, Alstom and EVN also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) covering other areas of cooperation. These include the establishment of training programmes for EVN engineers and working together to deploy online monitoring of power plants, reducing fuel consumption and improving plant efficiency. The JV and MoU deepen the long-term relationship between EVN and Alstom spanning more than twenty years, encompassing major hydro projects such as Son La and Huoi Quang, and thermal power plants like the Phu My gas-fired facilities.
“The JV and MoU highlight EVN’s commitment to improving the performance of the power generation sector in Vietnam and in developing high-tech industry and employment. Building on our long-term partnership with Alstom we can use our collective expertise to provide advanced services to the power generation sector and develop one of the leading technical facilities in the country,” commented Mr Thanh.
Alstom is a global leader in the world of power generation, power transmission and rail infrastructure and sets the benchmark for innovative and environmentally friendly technologies. The Group employs 92,000 people in around 100 countries. It had sales of €20 billion and booked close to €22 billion in orders in 2011/12.
